A year has passed!

I can't believe a year has passed since I wrote anything in my blog - I think the quicker and instant Twitter and Facebook social networks have been more convenient and have taken over a little!

Anyhoo - here I am blogging about my latest additions to my greeting card collection.

I have designed bi-lingual (English/Welsh - Saesneg/Cymraeg) Easter/Pasg, New Home/Ty Newydd and New Baby/Baban Newydd cards, with more designs to follow very soon.

Refurbishment

My office/studio has undergone a major re-furb this weekend. With new storage, shelving, cupboards and drawers everything now has it's ideal home!

Feeling organised is a great way to start the week's work. BIG Thanks to my lovely husband for all his hard work and manual labour!

National Botanic Gardens Wedding Fair

We had a great day at the RSVP wedding fayre yesterday. The National Botanic Gardens was an unusual venue but very enjoyable and proved a popular day out for hundreds of brides and grooms-to-be.

The weather was beautiful and the gardens looked stunning.

We look forward to meeting with our new clients at the meetings arranged yesterday and to working with you all to make your wedding days even more special with our unique wedding stationery.

Our wedding stationery & favours

Our cruise wedding stationery designed by us both, taking inspiration from the art deco travel posters of the 1930s and the modern design of our ship Ventura.

The wedding favours included handbag mirrors for the ladies and bottle opener keyrings for the men presented in organza bags, as well as matching desktop calendars.

Just a quick update about our wedding.

We married onboard P&O's mv Ventura on 22nd September 2009.The ceremony was conducted by Captain K. Dowds.

We had 36 guests with us and enjoyed a fabulous day! I can recommend this type of wedding wholeheartedly - we were so well looked after and everything went smoothly.

The food, drinks and photography were excellent. We all enjoyed a great week's cruising too, a really special time for all of us.

If anyone out there would like more info on this kind of wedding, feel free to get in touch, I'd be glad to give more details.

Sorry for the lack of posting lately, but this July/Aug have been mad months.
With only 6 weeks to my own wedding and lots and lots of customers' weddings happening as well, I have been stretched out with work!!
I had my own hen night last weekend which was fantastic! The stag night is in 2 weeks time...

Tying bows can be tricky!

For those of you with ribbon style invitations, perhaps big satin bows to tie (pictured) - you'll know how tricky it can be to get those bows looking perfect (and straight!).

Wedding Fair - Parc y Scarlets, March 1st

Weddings galore!

Apparently 2009 is a boom year for weddings! The cause is quite amazing, (I have read in the press that:) rather than put off their weddings until possible better financial climes ahead, many people are more keen to marry during a recession than in boom times. Maybe its a need for security, maybe its for some other reasons, but whatever the cause, I think it can only be a good thing for society as a whole. People seem to bond more in times of need and its always great to have a celebration to look forward to as well.
I hope the current trend of getting married lasts beyond the financial unrest as some solidity in life can only be a good thing!

Blimey - its been ages!

Hello all,
I have been completely neglecting my blog (for months in fact) but the reality is that its been last on my list - my list has been work, work, work! Which is of course all good.

2009 promises to be an exciting year, with my own wedding to look forward to and enjoy!
December/January has been hectic with lots of quite last minute requests for stationery and some of these have been large orders with plenty of work involved. I have visited quite a few new clients already this year and have attended a wedding fair at the Diplomat Hotel last Sunday.

On March 1st I will be attending a large fair at the Parc y Scarlets Stadium, Llanelli. It will be an exciting event (run by RSVP wedding co-ordinators) with plenty to see including catwalk shows. If you can make it, come and find me to see our latest designs and special offers.

My work is to be exhibited at the Giles Gallery in Pontyclun, so if you happen to be around, do drop in. Beth Giles's gallery is lovely and has plenty of lovely items to see and buy.

Ostrich Feather Quill Pens

I've been busy lately creating lots of ostrich feather pens. These are made from two luxurious feathers in a range of luscious colours, each trimmed with satin ribbons, sequins and beads.

The pens have a ballpoint nib, so you get all the glamour of the feathers, without the messing about with old fashioned quill nibs and ink!

Great for signing the register and passing around with the guest book. A lovely souvenir of your big day.

Here's an example of my work desk on a busy day - this time covered in placecards for Rachael and Dafydd's wedding a couple of weeks ago.

Rachael is from Yorkshire and Dafydd is Welsh, so they combined a Yorkshire Rose and a Welsh Dragon on all their stationery. The colour scheme of green and gold worked really well with this 'Guinevere' design and I enjoyed working on this lovely commission.

Just to highlight a new website called 'Folksy' which is for craftspeople to sell their wares and crafts lovers to buy them!

I think its great! Very like Etsy, but Etsy is US based, so its nice to have something here in the UK and operating in GBP £££!

Our wedding - update

Just a quick update for those of you kind enough to enquire about our own wedding! We now have the cruise booked, the wedding booked, 33 guests booked (excluding us 2), the dress bought and the suits booked. Thats it for now!
We can't arrange any more with the cruise company until nearer the time, when we have to decide on eating/drinking arrangements, music, photography, flowers and cake. In the meantime, my bridesmaids and I will start looking for their dresses in the next few weeks to see what suits and decide on colours.
Its all amazingly exciting - I now know how my bride-to-be clients feel - which is very nice!!

Wedding Bookmarks

In May I supplied one wedding with personalised bookmark wedding favours. These also doubled up as placecards as I included the name of a guest on each bookmark. Here are some pics showing the bride & groom's bookmarks. (Thank you Elin and Tom!).

The theme of this wedding was Celtic, and the colour scheme was silver, ivory & pink. We decided that the ladies' bookmarks should be pink and the mens' silver which looked great!

Weddings & Wedding Fayre

Last Sunday (29th June) we were at the Diplomat Hotel wedding fayre which was organised by Vanessa from Cariad Bridal - thanks Vanessa!

It was the first time we'd attended a Summer fayre, as they tend to be early year or autumn, but it was a great success and will be repeated next year.

Here are a couple of pics of my stand at the fayre, courtesy of Wels h Bride (which is a great site for brides to find wedding suppliers throughout Wales, as well as chat to other brides on their forum) - the first pic is of me and the second is my Mum helping a couple of ladies choose some invitations.

Bridesmaid Bears

I've had quite a flurry of orders for these little critters lately - Bridesmaid Bears. They are 'dressed' to order in a selection of coloured satin dresses, although this one has a chiffon overlay to match the flower girl outfit. Each bear has a ribbon flower decoration on its head and a flower in its paw too.

They are presented in a transparent acrylic tube to keep them looking pristine. I have, in the past, created 33 bears the same for wedding favours, but usually they are flower girl or bridesmaid gifts and I just make one or three or six..!

Feel free to ask me for your bears in any colour scheme and if you have any extras you need such as a rose on the waist like this one its no problem!

Here's the back view so you can see the bow on the waistband.

Each little bear is pale brown in colour with black eyes and nose. They vary in expression and character (as you'd expect any bear to) so yours may vary slightly from the one shown. The measurements are approx 8cms or 3.2" tall.

I was blogging almost every day at the start - but I'm afraid work has taken over as the wedding season has got busier. I have realised its just about one blog per month at the moment. Shameful! Here we are almost through June without a blog!

I have noticed an increase in potential clients asking me all about when to send invitations out and when should they order them and how many etc etc.
So, I intend to start answering some of these questions here until I get a dedicated page up and running on my website.

Invitation Timings
Wedding day invitations should be sent out 8-12 weeks before your wedding. The exact timing depends on your wedding location and time of year. For instance, if you are marrying abroad or over the Christmas holidays you will need to let people know as soon as possible.
(For our own wedding we have sent our invitations out in April/May 2008 for our wedding in Sept 2009, because we're marrying on a cruise and we don't want our guests to find all the cabins sold out when they try to book.)
Evening invitations can be sent out a little later than the day ones, and this gives you the chance to 'upgrade' some potential evening guests to day guests if you find some day invitations have been declined.
If you choose to send out 'save the date' cards, you may send them out as early as you wish. Indeed, if you are marrying abroad, these are a great idea. This gives you more time to sort out the invitations too.

Invitation Amounts
Usually invitations are sent out one per family or per couple, so add up your guest list carefully before ordering. Always try and order a few extra, as most of my clients find they underestimated - when they come to write their invitations, they've often forgotten to include someone on the list!

What happened?

Well, I just noticed I hadn't blogged since April! I don't know what happened in the time in between, well, yes I do, but it just went to fast!!
In between my usual work of wedding stationery and freelance graphic design, we have been decorating here at home and in another property which we rent out, organising our own wedding and all the other usual chores. We're exhausted! Luckily we have had help on the DIY front from family, and I have had some help on my stationery 'production lines' from my parents who are very arty/crafty people too!

'Hello' to Louise & Richard who married on 10th May and Katrina and Nigel who married on 9th May - hope your wedding days were wonderful! Louise & Richard had the 'Flutterby' range of stationery designed specially for them, its now available to all (see above pic)! Katrina and Nigel had the 'Simplicity' range which is a classic and romantic design.

This Saturday (24th) is the wedding of Fiona and Rob, so good luck to you and to Elin and Tom for the 31st May.

What a week! We have booked our wedding for next year! Aboard a cruise ship - so we'll be married by the captain at sea. If anyone out there is trying to book this type of wedding you'll know how difficult it is to research, and then at the end to get the cabins you want, the ship you want and the destination as well! I'm thinking of adding a page to my website about it as there doesn't seem to be enough info out there! We are so grateful to Dawn, our agent who made the whole thing possible! Thank you!!!
I have designed our wedding stationery (with some help from my fiance) and will be making the invitations this week, as guests will have to know way in advance to make sure they get cabins! So far we have 14 guests booked, and thats before we send out the invites! We hope to have more - it should be great day and we hope very memorable.
Well, enough about ours, I have to get back on track with everyone else's now! I have a lot of weddings happening during May so lots of orders of service, placecards and table plans to do.

Can't believe the week has flown so quickly. The weather today is grey and damp, quite a shock after the summery day we enjoyed yesterday.

Today is the wedding day of my clients Emily & Phil, so I wish them all the very best for their future together, and here is a pic of their guest book...
There seem to be a lot of April weddings this year and even more in May!

In other news my Mum has been busy making these gorgeous floral corsage (or gift decorations) - you choose whether you want a pin or foam sticky on the reverse. They are all 'one of a kind' (OOAK) and you can ask for other colours. They will appear in her Etsy sh op over the weekend.

Our Wedding

Well, in other news this weekend, me and my lovely fella got engaged on Good Friday... So now we can start planning our own wedding (including the stationery of course!) for early next Summer. After all the weddings I've been professionally involved in over the years its very exciting to be thinking about my own!
Better go now, still have my usual wedding work to do - I'll have to try and not think about ours during work hours...

Birthday

Well, today is my birthday - won't say which one, but it is a milestone!
In between opening my lovely pressies I have had time to design a Stag and Hen Night series of invitations and poster invitations.

The posters are great for inviting a lot of people at once, at the office, college, club or gym etc.

It is a dusky pink ostrich feather pen - made with two luxurious feathers attached to a ballpoint pen and decorated with satin ribbons, pearly sequins and crystal beads on silver wire.

May and July seem to be the most popular wedding months this year. which has made my early year very busy indeed! Here are some photos of my studio tables with work in progress.

The first photo is a custom version of my 'Lovespoon' design - the couple wanted a more modern take on the design, so we have replaced the spoon with two Celtic hearts and replaced the ribbon border with a silver bow at the base (not quite finished in the photo!)

The other photo is my ever popular lily design 'Pure White' - this time in ivory with gold text.

Bridesmaid Bears

Well, you may remember last week I said I would show you my latest Bridesmaid Bears, well here they are. They were made for Tammy's bridesmaids. Tammy & Leighton got married Saturday which is why I couldn't display them until after the wedding. The theme for the day was daffodils, as the wedding was on St David's Day.
Other clients to marry on Saturday include Mary and Mansell, who had a Welsh Lovespoon theme for their stationery. I was lucky enough to go to the evening reception with my partner and it was a lovely celebration. The bride looked wonderful and the couple had enjoyed a very special day.

I actually dreamt it up - yes really.

What you can't see from these pics is that the tresure chest is a magnet and can be removed from the card and placed on the fridge or memo board.

Haven't had a chance to blog since last Friday. Its been so busy. Thought I'd take a moment to tell you I have made my first sale at Etsy - my online store (based in the US). I have sold a personalised guest book to a couple in Dallas. Prices are listed in US$ but anyone in the world can buy from Etsy - using PayPal. With the dollar exchange as it is you can just about halve the price and thats what it would be in GB£.
Better be off - got lots and lots to do....

I can't believe its Friday again! What a quick week...

I have been busy this week making up invitation orders, one for a couple in Ireland (K&N) and another for a local couple (L&R). I also had to order a huge amount of guest books and photo albums ready to personalise and decorate - I've had a lot of orders for those lately, and the quill pens are whizzing out too.

Next week is looking busy with two appointments to see prospective clients on Monday alone, plus a delivery to do on Tuesday and lots more invitations to make. Also I have two couples getting married on March 1st, so I'll be busy with orders of service, placecards and table plans.

I'm putting a special package together for my Etsy store - Photo album, guest book (both decorated and personalised) with a quill pen for £49.95 ($100). Check it out later today.

Well, the wedding fayre was a big success. Lots of new faces, as we hadn't attended a Carmarthen event before. Thanks to everyone who took the trouble to come out on such a cold and wet day! We appreciated your efforts...
Lots of quotes were given out on the day and we made appointments to see several brides and grooms too. I've already received calls this morning from brides who saw me yesterday to follow up their enquiries.

Thanks to Lindsey for helping me on the stand all day - you were a great help! Thanks too to Jane (from Dynevor Wedding Cars) and Wendy (from Blodwen flowers) for organising the event, and to the Ivy Bush Hotel for the lovely buffet!

New today - 'Daisy Daisy' - a lovely, fresh design for Spring & Summer weddings!
'Daisy Daisy' is a clean, classic wedding invitation featuring a daisy flower (drawn by Sarah) printed on a white or ivory linen textured card and a embellished with a glittering gem stone centre.

This design looks great in any colour - we have made up pink, gold, red, blue and green, but many more colours are available, please ask for your choice.

Choose from a wide range of flower and gem stone colours on a choice of white or ivory linen textured card. 152 x 104mm, with matching envelope & insert.

The evening invitation features one daisy, but otherwise is the same design and size.

Wedding Traditions 1 - Giving the bride a wooden spoon

Part 1 of our Wedding Tradition Series

"The tradition of giving a wooden spoon to a new Bride dates back many years. The wooden spoon was considered to be the most useful utensil in her kitchen and would be used to help the new Wife to cook meals for her new husband, and later on, her family."

This might be considered old fashioned by many brides today, as after all, most men get involved in the cooking... But still, its a lovely tradition and I'm sure every bride is pleased to receive one (they can always share it with their husband!), along with the many horseshoes, chimney sweeps and rolling pins (more on those later)!

With this in mind, we have created some very pretty wooden spoons to give to the bride - you can even ask us for your choice of colour scheme. We hand-trim each spoon with ribbons, lace and beads and finish off by adding a tag with the happy couple's names and wedding date. I am pleased to announce the launch of my online Etsy store. Etsy is a great place to buy all things handmade from all over the world.

Please go to http://www.SarahLouiseDesigns.etsy.com to buy Sarah Louise handmade wedding items direct. The prices are in US$, but with the exchange rate at the moment, its quite easy to translate that into GB£ - its almost half! $1 currently (29th Jan) is equal to just over £0.50.

Payments can be made through PayPal (perfect for all you eBayers out there!) or if you're in the UK I also accept cheques and postal orders.

Look out for more items being added regularly.

I will be listing greeting cards for every occasion as soon as possible. Many will be able to be personalised to the buyer's requirements.

Wedding guest books are featured at the moment, but these can also be made for babies' Christenings and showers or birthdays and anniversaries.
